I can sympathize.

MP4 is a “container” format, and the contents may be in any of a number of
different codecs. I have had some luck with GOM Player (www.gomlab.com)
which offers to search for a needed codec if it is not on your system. It
succeeds only about half the time, but at least you know what the problem
is. The other off-the-wall possibility is that the downloads are
rights-protected, though that seems unlikely in view of their provenance.
