While IMHO not as good as the original 1969 version, this rendition with the
adorable little Eric Lloyd is still well worth adding to your holiday lineup
:)
Patty Duke just doesn't 'do' the role of Sook for me --not that she doesn't
portray an aging, yet mentally childish woman (perhaps too well at times
:-P)-- but she just isn't able to inspire the same closeness and sympathy I
felt for Geraldine Page.
As far as the role of Buddy goes, Eric Lloyd comes off as being a bit more, I
don't want to say 'mature,' exactly - perhaps 'polished' would be the better
term, than Donnie Melvin from the original. I was totally enamored with
Donnie's honest, down-to-earth demeanor and performance, but Eric, while
turning in an adequate bit of acting (and being a joy to gaze upon, as well
:) ), just wasn't on par with his predecessor.
To each his own opinion, so your mileage may vary...
