Nicholas is the shy, lonely young son of an embittered minor diplomat,
Harrington Brande, from the British Consulate. Separated from his wife,
passed over for promotion, and forced to accept a lesser position than what he
feels he deserves, the elder Brande is posted to the beautiful but small port
town of San Jorge, in Spain. Taken along, Nicholas is forced to lead a quiet
life by his domineering father.
Starved for the attention he lacks from the busy, preoccupied parent, Nicholas
to local sights and customs, and includes him on fishing trips and outings to
sports events, much to the boy's delight.
Unfortunately, Brande soon becomes jealous of his son's affection for the Span-
iard, and, aided and abetted by his chauffeur, Garcia, sets out to complicate
arrested as a thief and sent to trial in Barcelona. But the plan backfires on
Gardener.

rather soft and fuzzy in parts. Also, while presented in anamorphic 'Wide-
screen,' it isn't the correct 1.85:1, which was the original VistaVision
aspect ratio, so we're still missing picture information on both sides...
In 1956, Jon Whiteley was eleven years and with an extraordinary C.V.
from his ration of one film per year since 1951. He had won a
special Academy Award for his part in "The Kidnappers," and, in his
most recent film, "Moonfleet," he had been directed by Fritz Lang, an
experience he describes as "like working with Michaelangelo." Jon and
Dirk Bogarde had not met since the release of "Hunted" over four years
earlier and their reunion took place at the restaurant at Pinewood
Studios during pre-production on "The Spanish Gardener." "Before I
saw him, I heard his voice", remembers Jon Whiteley. "He was com-
plaining about the garlic in the lamb. From the start, there was a
slight reserve; it stayed right through the making of the film. I
remembered him as a friend with whom I had lost contact, but there
was never quite the rapport we had had before."
Jon Whiteley is the first to admit that he himself had altered some-
what, too --and not only in height-- since their happy time working
priggish. I guess that was true of me, too." That said, he found
"Dirk had become more self-regarding than he had been in 1951. His
sense of humour had become more unkind, a tiny bit acid. I didn't
care for it when he made remarks against the people with whom he was
working." The stills photography which had been a minor irritant to
Whiteley on "Hunted" was now a pest as he and Dirk were captured off-
set at every turn. Dirk obviously didn't want a child star in a film
to outshine him and maybe he was by then a little envious of Jon,
who, since they had last met, had won an Oscar, been to Hollywood,
met the Queen and so on. Dirk was now anxious to preserve his
position. He was quite different towards Jon.
At the time, 1956, Jon Whiteley's parents were concerned about the
novel by A.J. Cronin, "How Green Was My Valley," on which the film
was based, and wanted all references to it removed from the film.
Particularly the part in Chapter 15 of the novel where the doctor,
at the father's insistence, has a man to man talk with Nicholas and
tries, without success, to get the boy to admit to having a sexual
relationship with the gardener. Rank assured them the film would be
made for family consumption. But, even with all the altering and
cutting, the film still comes across as ambiguous, prompting one
critic to write: "The film's very likely homosexual relationship
between the virile gardener and the effeminate youngster never
materialises, even though it lays there like an omelette that never
rises."
