If I may be allowed to paraphrase:
It's better to keep your mouth closed (fingers idle <grin>) and be
thought a fool than to open it (post a message) and remove all doubt.
You should never argue with a crazy person -- you can't win and
eventually no one will be able to figure out which of you is the crazy
one!
You should never proselytize to pigs: it does no good and annoys the
pigs.
As one who faced the trolls daily in a SUPPORT group where I felt it
was necessary to answer their questions, taunts and name-calling
logically and calmly so that the proper message would get out to any
and all lurkers -- you can't win, so why are you playing?
But I guess what really bothers me is the idea that Jimmy was
criticizing posters -- no, he was making a statement of good advice.
The question is why you chose to see it as criticism? For that matter,
what's wrong with polite criticism? Yeah, attacking posters is both
wrong and stupid, but are you suggesting that I can't humbly offer you
information that you may not have that will improve your posts? Or do
you find that question to be "too critical?"
People who are too sensitive about messages here on Usenet get their
feelings hurt a lot! Written word does not have the power to give you
clues such as tone of voice or facial expressions or even body
language that helps you interpret messages -- and thus, it's far
easier to misinterpret. Take a little extra time and think about it
before you respond.
