Though the average person generally assumes Deep Throat was the first theatrically-released porno, that honor actually belongs to Mona, aka Mona The Virgin Nymph, released two years earlier. True, there were such precedents as the clinically explicit white-coater Man and Wife in 1969, as well as Alex de Renzy's 1970 breakthrough documentary Pornography in Denmark. And since there were plenty of undocumented 16mm sex-film obscurities that flirted with hardcore-made primarily for those ubiquitous storefront theaters-we can only assume that some of them must've had scenes that crossed the line, though none of them had any impact on the public and almost all have been forgotten by time. But Mona was different. Mona gained instant notoriety as the first nationally-released (by Sherpix) 35mm feature film to play actual movie theaters that was pure, unapologetic, 100% porn.
It's also perversely funny. Saving herself for marriage, virgin Mona (FIFI WATSON) refuses to have intercourse with Tim, her fiancee: "I promised my mother I'd be a virgin when I get married!" She is, however, more than willing to "do that other thing" and cheerfully munches his member right out in the middle of a picnic ground surronded by sunshine and chirping birdies.
Liking it, Mona quickly becomes a nympho virgin by slurping, swallowing, gulping, and gobbling her way through the rest of the day. She starts by slobbering the stalk of a guy in an alley: "I have a taste for these things!" In the afternoon, she eats the box lunch of a blonde hooker. For dinner, she chows down on a young man in the aisle seat of a movie theater.
Meanwhile, her prim, proper, and extremely horny mother (JUDY ANGEL) becomes a finger-furious masturbation machine (complete with truly scary closeups) after opening the pages of a dirty novel, before making it with Tim: "You remind me so much of Mona's father!" But when Tim discovers Mona flagrante delicto at the movie theater, he freaks, ties the suck-happy slut to a bed, and invites her recent conquests over to participate in an all-out, old-fashioned, down-and-dirty triple-XXX orgy....
Yup, Mona's a genuine porno classic alright. As Variety summed it up, Mona was 'the long-awated link between the stag loops and conventional theatrical fare." Producer BILL OSCO and director HOWARD ZIEHM followed Mona with Harlot (1971) before making the cult hit Flesh Gordon (1974). Osco went on to produce the X-rated Alice in Wonderland (1976), as well as more mainstream films like Night Patrol (1984) and Blood Diner (1987). (He also starred alongside Jason Williams in the nasty 1973 crime thriller Cop Killers.)
But the big news here is how Mona looks. Shot in 16mm and blown up to 35mm, Something Weird has finally removed decades of crud by digitally remastering it form the original 35mm negative (!!!). Yeah, she's still a sex fiend alright, but the old girl's never looked this good. #35082

The Jazz Singer of fuck films, Mona was pretty sure of itself for a lonely pioneer. It had a busy soundtrack: clavichord, old pop tunes, harmonica and jug band music, an Indian raga and a long audio extract from The Taming of the Shrew. It revealed Mona as a kind of fellatio virtuoso: when a guy she has solicited for a back-alley blow job tries to pay her, she replies daintily, "I didn't do it for money. I have a taste for these things." It boasts a piquant blend of tease and sympathy, and has a few laughs at its audience's expense. Mona says she's going to see a film, and Mother advises: "You be careful now. You don't know what kind of people are in a movie house nowadays."

The least impacting and memorable pioneer in any field I have yet to come across

Mona the Virgin Nymph was the first pornographic film to receive a full theatrical in America in 1970. While it may not have earned the recognition and merited the cult impact of Debbie Does Dallas and Deep Throat, Mona paved the way for a great deal of contemporaries, many of which, admittedly, of better quality, and was a landmark film in defeating America's tight grip on pornographic and "obscene" content.
Mona the Virgin Nymph's basic plot doesn't allow for the guilty arousal and deep-rooted ideas of Taboo to play out, the wit of Deep Throat that wound up being just as memorable as the sex scenes, nor does it have the same kind of arousing sex scenes as Debbie Does Dallas. For being a pioneer, Mona's simplicity doesn't allow for much of a cultural impact, or even an impact on its field, because of how generic everything about it is. It's low-grade videography give the film a dreary sepia toned hue, and the sex scenes are more often than not shot with extreme close-ups, with little concern for space or atmosphere.
Then there's the fact that the sex scenes occur with five minutes, give or take, between each one. During this downtime, we get little sense of the characters and aren't given much of anything other than cheap dialog to sneer at. Films of The Golden Age of Porn proved that sex can have plots, both fairly simple and subversive, yet still succeed in being arousing motion pictures. Mona, however, gets so simple that it winds up being forgettable almost instantaneously after it concludes. It has to be the least impacting pioneer in any field that I have yet to come across.

Mona the Virgin Nymph (or simply Mona) was the first pornographic film depicting explicit sex to receive wide theatrical release in the United States (1970),[1] following the previous decade's nudist-themed films. The minimal plot involves Mona (played by Fifi Watson), who has promised her mother that she would remain a virgin until her impending marriage.
It was produced by Bill Osco and directed by Michael Benveniste and Howard Ziehm,[3] though the film was screened without credits due to legal concerns. The earnings from this film helped finance the directors' later film Flesh Gordon. The team also produced another adult movie Harlot (1971), and Bill Osco later produced the similarly explicit Alice in Wonderland (1976).

Porn pioneer Bill Osco's film was remarkable as the first, theatrically-released, feature-length 100% hardcore narrative film with an actual storyline -- actually a threadbare plot (accompanied by explicit sex scenes) that created the pattern for future porn films of the 70s. This film's storyline was borrowed, to some degree, by Gerard Damiano's Deep Throat (1972).
The 'porno chic' movie was screened without credits (to avoid legal problems). It was shot in three days on a budget of about $5,000. Remarkably, it played in major US cities (San Francisco and New York) and was not banned or shut down.
The prurient film told about the title character - Mona (Fifi Watson), an engaged girl who had been initiated into oral sex by her father (his strange intention was to preserve her virginity for her future husband). Mona promised her nefarious widowed mother (Judy Angel) that she wouldn't have intercourse with fiancee Tim (Orrin North). She vowed that she would be a virgin on her wedding day - meaning no explicit penile-vaginal penetration (except that everything else, including oral sex, was permissible). She joyfully performed fellatio on Tim in the outdoors, with a stranger in an alley, cunnilingus on a blonde prostitute (Stewart), and then touched herself in a movie theatre before providing more oral sex to a male in an aisle seat.
At the same time, Mona's self-pleasuring, garter-belted mother was having passionate sex with her future son-in-law. The film ended with mother and daughter confessing to their full-on sexual indiscretions. When Tim found out about Mona's other partners, he tied Mona down on a bed, and all of her previous partners engaged in a major oral sex-party.
