Dont be suckered by people's declarations of faith. It is one thing
for someone to huff and puff about what they believe when they feel
safe and secure, but when they are think they are facing death, then
you see the truth about the depth of their faith. I had a friend who
huffed and puffed about God doing this or that in his life, then he
had a medical situation and needed an operation that required
anesthesia, and he was crying like a baby with fear to me... I was
thinking, where is your faith now! Why are you so terrified?! This
friend happened to be an anesthesiologist, so maybe he didnt trust his
own co-workers to be careful and precise in doing their jobs. I dont
know his fears, because I didnt care to ask at that point. I am only
just speculating now as I reflect upon his fears. There is a great
film from the 1990's, "The Doctor" with Willam Hurt, about a cold
hearted callous doctor who gets cancer and becomes a patient who
experiences the situation from the other side of things. It gives a
behind the scenes look at how doctors are just people doing jobs, who
can be careless lazy slobs who make serious mistakes... I have
several family relations who have suffered at the hands of careless
doctors...
Anyhow, my point is that people are people, and facing death is not an
easy situation for anyone, unless they are in great pain and incurable
suffering. I would think the atheist, in general, would have a better
perspective, a more sane and sober attitude in facing the truth of a
situation, whereas the more religious types are more prone to hysteria
when God seems to be failing to protect them... They feed on delusion
and expect some type of Hollywood death with God and the angels...
maybe that's too harsh... but for me, i dont envy them... I'm just
glad I snapped out of that perverted delusion while I still have some
life left.
