It's a city-sized enterprise dedicated to global trade and the biggest seaport
in the UK, in terms of the weight of goods it handles. He discovers how this
east coast energy importer has been specially engineered to import the vast
quantities of coal needed to generate electricity for our power-hungry
lifestyles. Can he master the complex, and surprisingly delicate, controls of a
massive crane to learn the secrets of unloading tons of cargo? He also meets
the foreign crew of a mighty super-tanker who spend months of their lives at
sea. What is life like for the Filipino sailors during their few precious hours
in an English port?
Tessa Dunlop uncovers the astonishing story of how Hitler's bombers could have
drowned London, and possibly won the Second World War, by destroying the
embankments that contain the River Thames. Tessa reveals the ingenious and
secret wartime defensive schemes, devised to prevent the Thames flooding the
capital city during air raids. To protect those sheltering in the tube network,
a chain of underwater microphones and steel floodgates was installed in top-
secret, with the evidence still visible today.
Ruth Goodman investigates the clandestine coastal sex trade that scandalised
Victorian Britain. In the mid-19th century the Royal Navy was in crisis as
sailors fell prey to sexually-transmitted diseases. The government brought in
draconian laws to detain and forcibly treat women suspected of being
prostitutes, but one fearless Victorian social campaigner, Josephine Butler,
was determined to take on the establishment. Despite the social embarrassment
and hostility that her campaign attracted, Josephine fought tirelessly to
prevent prostitutes being thrown into the much-feared 'Lock Hospitals', but
would she win?
Mark Horton reveals how solving the greatest scientific puzzle of the 18th
century, determining a ship's exact position at sea, meant Greenwich became the
epicentre of global sea navigation. The problem of working out a vessel's
longitude had foiled the world's best brains, so the British government offered
a prize to any member of the public who could crack longitude. Madcap schemes
flooded in and turned the longitude prize into a national joke. James Harrison
and his remarkable sea clock are credited with finally solving the conundrum,
but the full story is even more remarkable. In truth, it was Britain's
astronomers who provided a practical solution to longitude and made Greenwich
the most important location on any sailor's sea chart.
In Liverpool, world champion free runner Ryan Doyle shows off his gravity-
defying skills as he sprints, leaps and tumbles around the city's docklands.
Ryan explains how the sea is in his blood and how its spirit of adventure spurs
him on to new heights with his free running.
