It there is anything at all commercially available in FLAC format, I
haven't heard of it. I suspect the only place you might find them would
be on one of our groups, if one or more of our posters decided to switch
over from mp3. Audacity, free for both Windows and Mac, can export in
FLAC format, should anybody be interested.
FLAC files certainly sound very good, but they're big, and use a lot
more bandwidth than mp3s. They compress to 50 to 60 percent the size of
the original WAV or AIFF, more than twice the size of an mp3. Those
with slow connections might have to develop even more patience.
Those who use iTunes, either because they're Mac users or because they
carry their music around on iPods, would have to use third-party
software to convert the FLAC files to Apple's lossless format, ALE. Of
course, only half as many tunes could fit on the iPod in lossless
format. There's also a QuickTime plug-in that lets iTunes play both
FLAC and Ogg Vorbis files available, but I haven't tried it yet, so I
don't know how well it works.):

Of course, if bandwidth and speed aren't problems anymore, posting could
be done in WAV or AIFF format, and those who wanted to could extract
mp3s for their portable players using iTunes or similar software.
